Area and volume are exact geometry. Tonnage depends on bulk density, which varies with moisture, gradation and rock type.
Compaction is applied before waste: you need extra loose material to reach a compacted finished depth, and then a little more for spillage.
Suppliers publish a density for their own material. Ask for it, and order by weight if that is how they sell.
