Fence Calculator

Calculate fence posts and sections from run length, maximum spacing and layout extras.

Enter your measurements below and the result updates as you type. Check the visible assumptions before ordering.

Formula and source notes

The formula is: sections is ceil(run length ÷ maximum spacing); open-run posts is sections + 1 + layout extras; closed-loop posts is sections + layout extras.

This calculation uses no default material density or yield; its product values and allowances come from the visible inputs and should be checked against the drawing, label or supplier.

How the fence calculator works

Sections are the run divided by maximum spacing, rounded up so spacing never exceeds the limit. An open run needs one more endpoint post than sections; a closed loop does not.

Gate sides, corners, stepped grade and terminal conditions are layout events. Add their extra posts explicitly rather than hiding them in a vague waste percentage.

Formula used for fence calculator

The calculator keeps the measured quantity separate from any purchase rounding or allowance.

  1. Sectionsceil(run length ÷ maximum spacing)
  2. Open-run postssections + 1 + layout extras
  3. Closed-loop postssections + layout extras

These are measurement and ordering choices, not structural specifications or code requirements.

Measure and order fence

Measure every run along the fence line. Draw gates, ends and corners before trusting a count.

Maximum spacing is not a structural recommendation. Use the fence system, site conditions and local requirements to choose spacing and footing details.

Fence Calculator questions

  • Why are there more posts than sections?

An open line of sections needs a post at both ends, so posts equal sections plus one.

  • Does a gate need extra posts?

Usually gate openings have dedicated posts; enter the extra count from the hardware layout.

  • Does this calculate pickets?

No. Pickets depend on panel style, picket width and gap.

Where these numbers come from

This calculator uses geometry and values shown in the form. Editable product dimensions, coverage figures, prices and allowances are inputs, not universal recommendations; confirm them against the product label, drawing or supplier quote.
