Brick Calculator

Estimate whole bricks from wall dimensions, exposed brick face, mortar joint and waste.

Enter your measurements below and the result updates as you type. Check the visible assumptions before ordering.

Formula and source notes

The formula is: wall face is area = wall length × wall height; brick module is (face width + joint) × (face height + joint); count is wall area ÷ module area × allowance.

The key material assumptions are exposed face height of a modular brick of 2.25 in, cited to ASTM International (needs-review); default mortar joint thickness of 0.375 in, cited to ASTM International (needs-review); the MaterialTotals source registry explains their applicability and verification status.

How the brick calculator works

The count uses the exposed face plus one mortar joint in each direction to find the area occupied by each brick in the wall.

It assumes one visible wythe and a simple face-area layout. Bond pattern, returns, piers, arches and openings need a layout takeoff.

Formula used for brick calculator

The calculator keeps the measured quantity separate from any purchase rounding or allowance.

  1. Wall facearea = wall length × wall height
  2. Brick module(face width + joint) × (face height + joint)
  3. Countwall area ÷ module area × allowance

Measure and order brick

Measure the brick you will buy. “Standard” and “modular” names are not reliable dimensions across all markets.

Confirm whether corners, sills and specials are sold separately, and keep matching batch material for repairs.

Brick Calculator questions

  • Why does joint thickness matter?

The joint is part of the repeating wall module, so changing it changes how many bricks fit in each square foot.

  • Does this include mortar?

No. It counts face bricks only.

  • Should I subtract windows?

Subtract large openings, then add back the extra cutting and detailing their edges require in a layout allowance.

Assumptions used by this calculator result.
AssumptionValue used
Exposed face height of a modular brick.Brick sizes are not standardised across regions or manufacturers, and the mortar joint thickness matters as much as the brick. Measure the brick you are buying and enter both figures. Applicability: Launch-market starting value only. A future market must supply reviewed regional or product-specific provenance before overriding it. You can replace this with your own figure.2.25 in
Default mortar joint thickness.Joint thickness changes a brick count by roughly a fifth, so it is a required input rather than a hidden default. Measure an existing course or take the joint from your project specification. Applicability: Launch-market starting value only. A future market must supply reviewed regional or product-specific provenance before overriding it. You can replace this with your own figure.0.375 in
