Drywall Calculator

Estimate drywall sheets from wall area, openings, sheet size and a cut allowance.

Enter your measurements below and the result updates as you type. Check the visible assumptions before ordering.

Formula and source notes

The formula is: net wall is wall length × height − opening area; sheet area is sheet width × sheet length; sheets is net wall × allowance ÷ sheet area, rounded up.

The key material assumptions are area of a 4 ft by 8 ft drywall sheet of 32 ft², cited to ASTM International and Gypsum Association (needs-review); the MaterialTotals source registry explains their applicability and verification status.

How the drywall calculator works

The calculator subtracts repeated openings from gross wall area, applies a cut allowance, divides by sheet area and rounds up.

Area alone cannot optimize sheet orientation or seam placement. Longer sheets may reduce joints even when total square footage is unchanged.

Formula used for drywall calculator

The calculator keeps the measured quantity separate from any purchase rounding or allowance.

  1. Net wallwall length × height − opening area
  2. Sheet areasheet width × sheet length
  3. Sheetsnet wall × allowance ÷ sheet area, rounded up

Planning choices for drywall calculator

SituationUseWhy it matters
Wall height matches sheet lengthConsider vertical hangingMay reduce butt joints
Long uninterrupted wallCompare longer sheetsFewer joints can save finishing labour
Complex small roomsUse layout takeoffArea method may miss unusable offcuts

These are measurement and ordering choices, not structural specifications or code requirements.

Measure and order drywall

Measure ceilings separately if they are included. Count both sides of partitions when both faces receive board.

Choose sheet length around handling access and seam layout, not only the lowest mathematical count.

Drywall Calculator questions

  • Does this include ceilings?

Only if you add ceiling area as wall length and height equivalents; a separate area takeoff is clearer.

  • Should I subtract every opening?

Large openings should be deducted, but small offcuts around openings may not be reusable, so retain an appropriate allowance.

  • Does this calculate screws or compound?

No. Fastener pattern and finishing level are separate specifications.

Where these numbers come from

Assumptions used by this calculator result.
AssumptionValue used
Area of a 4 ft by 8 ft drywall sheet.A 4 ft by 8 ft sheet covers 32 square feet. Sheets are also sold in 10 ft and 12 ft lengths, and longer sheets mean fewer joints. Pick the size you are actually buying. Applicability: Launch-market starting value only. A future market must supply reviewed regional or product-specific provenance before overriding it. You can replace this with your own figure.32 ft²
