Siding Calculator

Estimate siding pieces from net wall area, exposed face width, stock length and cuts.

Enter your measurements below and the result updates as you type. Check the visible assumptions before ordering.

Formula and source notes

The formula is: coverage per piece is exposed width ÷ 12 × stock length; adjusted wall area is net wall area × (1 + cuts allowance); pieces is adjusted area ÷ piece coverage, rounded up.

This calculation uses no default material density or yield; its product values and allowances come from the visible inputs and should be checked against the drawing, label or supplier.

How the siding calculator works

The calculator uses exposed face width, not nominal board width, to determine the square feet covered by one stock piece.

It is suited to uniform boards or panels. Gable cuts, staggered joints, corners and trim require a wall-by-wall layout.

Formula used for siding calculator

The calculator keeps the measured quantity separate from any purchase rounding or allowance.

  1. Coverage per pieceexposed width ÷ 12 × stock length
  2. Adjusted wall areanet wall area × (1 + cuts allowance)
  3. Piecesadjusted area ÷ piece coverage, rounded up

Planning choices for siding calculator

SituationUseWhy it matters
Uniform lap sidingUse exposed widthOverlap is already removed
Panels sold by coverageUse package or panel areaMore direct than board count
Gable endLay out coursesShort top courses change offcut reuse

These are measurement and ordering choices, not structural specifications or code requirements.

Measure and order siding

Calculate net wall area after openings, then add returns or covered soffit areas separately.

Use the manufacturer’s stated exposure and installation details. Nominal width can materially overstate coverage.

Siding Calculator questions

  • What width should I enter?

Enter the installed exposed width, not the full or nominal width hidden by lap.

  • Are corners and trim included?

No. They are separate linear or piece counts.

  • Can I combine every wall?

For a first estimate, yes. A wall-by-wall layout is better where stock-length offcuts cannot transfer efficiently.

Where these numbers come from

This calculator uses geometry and values shown in the form. Editable product dimensions, coverage figures, prices and allowances are inputs, not universal recommendations; confirm them against the product label, drawing or supplier quote.
