Sand Calculator

Calculate sand volume from area, finished depth and an editable settling or waste allowance.

Enter your measurements below and the result updates as you type. Check the visible assumptions before ordering.

Formula and source notes

The formula is: finished volume is area × finished depth; order volume is finished volume × (1 + allowance).

This calculation uses no default material density or yield; its product values and allowances come from the visible inputs and should be checked against the drawing, label or supplier.

A rectangular sand area measured by length, width and finished depth.

How the sand calculator works

The tool calculates the finished rectangular volume and applies only the allowance entered in the form.

Sand type matters to its purpose and weight, but not to geometric cubic yards. Ask the supplier for a material recommendation rather than inferring it from the quantity.

Formula used for sand calculator

The calculator keeps the measured quantity separate from any purchase rounding or allowance.

  1. Finished volumearea × finished depth
  2. Order volumefinished volume × (1 + allowance)

Planning choices for sand calculator

SituationUseWhy it matters
Thin bedding layerMeasure depth carefullyA half-inch error can double volume
Fill with variable gradeAverage several depthsOne edge measurement is misleading
Order by tonUse supplier conversionMoisture changes bulk weight

These are measurement and ordering choices, not structural specifications or code requirements.

Measure and order sand

Take several depth readings where the base is uneven and use a defensible average or split the area into zones.

Confirm whether the selected sand is suitable for bedding, jointing, masonry or play use; equal quantities are not interchangeable products.

Sand Calculator questions

  • How many cubic feet are in a yard of sand?

A cubic yard is exactly 27 cubic feet, regardless of material.

  • Why not show tons?

Wet and dry sand can have materially different bulk weights, and supplier gradations differ.

  • Can I use this for paver joints?

It gives bulk volume, but packaged jointing products are usually ordered by manufacturer coverage instead.

Variables and units

For the default “Rectangular area” mode. Other modes label their own fields in the calculator.

Worked example: a 16 ft by 12 ft bedding layer

A bedding layer is 16 ft by 12 ft and 1 in deep, with 10% for placement loss.

Where these numbers come from

This calculator uses geometry and values shown in the form. Editable product dimensions, coverage figures, prices and allowances are inputs, not universal recommendations; confirm them against the product label, drawing or supplier quote.
