Road Base Calculator

Calculate road-base order volume from area, finished depth and your compaction allowance.

Enter your measurements below and the result updates as you type. Check the visible assumptions before ordering.

Formula and source notes

The formula is: finished volume is length × width × compacted depth; order volume is finished volume × (1 + allowance).

This calculation uses no default material density or yield; its product values and allowances come from the visible inputs and should be checked against the drawing, label or supplier.

How the road base calculator works

Finished geometry and loose order volume are shown separately. The calculator multiplies area by compacted depth, then applies the allowance you provide.

Road-base gradation, moisture and compaction effort control how loose volume becomes finished volume. There is no honest universal factor.

Formula used for road base calculator

The calculator keeps the measured quantity separate from any purchase rounding or allowance.

  1. Finished volumelength × width × compacted depth
  2. Order volumefinished volume × (1 + allowance)

Planning choices for road base calculator

SituationUseWhy it matters
Finished depth specifiedEnter that depthKeeps the design separate from ordering
Supplier gives loose-to-compacted factorUse it as allowanceMatches the actual product
Order by weightAsk for bulk densityVolume cannot determine tons alone

These are measurement and ordering choices, not structural specifications or code requirements.

Measure and order road base

Measure the compacted layer, not the full excavation if other materials occupy part of it.

Confirm delivery increments and whether the supplier quotes loose cubic yards or tons. Record moisture conditions if weight is used.

Road Base Calculator questions

  • Is road base the same as gravel?

Road base is usually a graded, compactable aggregate blend; decorative gravel may not behave the same way.

  • Does this calculate tons?

No. Entering a generic density would create false precision; use the supplier’s conversion for the actual material.

  • Should I include bedding sand?

No. Calculate each layer at its own finished depth.

Variables and units

Worked example: a 40 ft by 10 ft drive at 6 in

A driveway base is 40 ft by 10 ft at a 6 in finished depth, with a combined 25% supplier and placement allowance.

Where these numbers come from

This calculator uses geometry and values shown in the form. Editable product dimensions, coverage figures, prices and allowances are inputs, not universal recommendations; confirm them against the product label, drawing or supplier quote.
