How this site is built
Review the calculation methodology to see which figures are exact geometry, which depend on material assumptions, and which figures have recorded sources. The source registry records every cited figure and its review status.
How the mulch calculator works
Mulch volume is bed area times depth, followed by the allowance you choose. The result is shown in cubic yards and cubic feet.
The calculator does not prescribe depth. Existing material, plant crowns, slopes and the mulch product all affect the practical layer.
Formula used for mulch calculator
The calculator keeps the measured quantity separate from any purchase rounding or allowance.
- Bed area
rectangle = length × width; circle = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² - Bed volume
bed area × mulch depth - Order volume
bed volume × (1 + allowance) - Bag count
order cubic feet ÷ labelled bag volume, rounded up
Planning choices for mulch calculator
| Situation | Use | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangular border | Measure length and width | Fast and repeatable |
| Round bed | Use circle mode | Avoids counting the square outside the bed |
| Irregular bed | Split into simple shapes | Makes the approximation inspectable |
| Bagged product | Enter label volume | Bag size must match the product |
These are measurement and ordering choices, not structural specifications or code requirements.
Measure and order mulch
Measure only the planted bed. Break curves into short rectangles or use a known surveyed area.
Bulk mulch may be sold in full or half cubic yards. Bag labels usually state cubic feet; divide total cubic feet by the bag volume and round up.
Mulch Calculator questions
Does mulch type change cubic yards?
No. A cubic yard is a volume, though products settle and spread differently.
Should I subtract plants?
Usually not for small plants; subtract substantial hardscape or dense established areas if they meaningfully reduce coverage.
Can I convert yards to bags?
Yes, using the cubic-foot volume printed on the specific bag.
Variables and units
For the default “Rectangular area” mode. Other modes label their own fields in the calculator.
length- Length: ft, in, yd, m, cm.
width- Width: ft, in, yd, m, cm.
depth- Finished depth: in, ft, yd, m, cm.
allowance- Settling and waste allowance: %; optional.
bagVolume- Volume per bag: ft³; optional.
bulkPrice- Bulk price per cubic yard: per yd³; optional.
bagPrice- Price per bag: per bag; optional.
Worked example: a 28 ft by 6 ft border
A landscape border is 28 ft by 6 ft at a 3 in finished depth, with 10% extra for uneven edges and a 2 ft³ bag size copied from the label.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 28 ft |
| Width | 6 ft |
| Finished depth | 3 in |
| Settling and waste allowance | 10 % |
| Volume per bag | 2 ft³ |
| Bulk price per cubic yard | 0 per yd³ |
| Price per bag | 0 per bag |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Order volume | 1.71 yd³ |
| Whole bags to buy | 24 bags |
These figures are generated by the same calculation the calculator above uses, so they update automatically if the method changes.
Where these numbers come from
This calculator uses geometry and values shown in the form. Editable product dimensions, coverage figures, prices and allowances are inputs, not universal recommendations; confirm them against the product label, drawing or supplier quote.
