How the asphalt calculator works
The calculator multiplies paved area by compacted depth to get volume, applies the waste allowance entered in the form, and multiplies cubic feet by the entered asphalt mix density. Pounds are divided by 2,000 to show US short tons.
Area and volume are geometry. Tonnage is an estimate because density changes with the aggregate blend, binder content, air voids and achieved compaction. Use the approved mix design or supplier density when it is available.
This tool estimates quantity only. It does not choose pavement thickness, base preparation, lift sequence, mix type or compaction requirements.

Supplier minimums and truck capacities are purchase constraints, not part of the tonnage formula.
Measure and order asphalt
Split irregular paving into non-overlapping rectangles and add their results. Measure depth from the compacted pavement specification rather than the excavation depth, because base layers are separate materials.
Confirm whether the supplier quotes US short tons or metric tonnes, the density for the selected mix, the smallest order increment and the amount that can be placed before the mix cools.

What asphalt density should I enter?
Use the density from the supplier or approved mix design. The default is a planning value and should be replaced when project data is available.
Should depth be loose or compacted?
Enter the finished compacted asphalt depth. Loose placement thickness and compaction procedure belong to the paving specification.
Does this include the aggregate base?
No. Calculate road base or gravel as a separate layer using its own finished depth and material properties.
