Topsoil Calculator

Calculate bulk or bagged topsoil from area, finished depth, the bag label and your settling allowance.

Enter your measurements below and the result updates as you type. Check the visible assumptions before ordering.

Formula and source notes

The formula is: surface area is measured shape or known area; finished volume is area × finished depth; loose order is finished volume × (1 + settling allowance); bag count is loose cubic feet ÷ labelled bag volume, rounded up.

This calculation uses no default material density or yield; its product values and allowances come from the visible inputs and should be checked against the drawing, label or supplier.

How the topsoil calculator works

The finished soil layer is area times depth. The calculator then increases that geometric volume by the settling and handling allowance entered by the user.

Soil blends vary widely in moisture and organic content. Cubic yards are useful for volume orders; weight should come from the supplier.

Formula used for topsoil calculator

The calculator keeps the measured quantity separate from any purchase rounding or allowance.

  1. Surface areameasured shape or known area
  2. Finished volumearea × finished depth
  3. Loose orderfinished volume × (1 + settling allowance)
  4. Bag countloose cubic feet ÷ labelled bag volume, rounded up

Planning choices for topsoil calculator

SituationUseWhy it matters
Lawn topdressingUse shallow measured depthSmall depth changes drive the order
Raised bed fillSubtract existing fillOnly replacement volume is needed
Final grade variesCalculate zonesA single average can hide low spots

These are measurement and ordering choices, not structural specifications or code requirements.

Measure and order topsoil

Take level readings when grading rather than guessing from the deepest point. Calculate distinct depth zones separately.

Ask whether the quote is screened topsoil, a planting mix or another blend; equal cubic yards can have different settling behaviour.

Topsoil Calculator questions

  • Why add a settling allowance?

Loose soil loses volume after placement, watering and consolidation. Enter a factor appropriate to the actual blend.

  • Does this include compost?

Only if compost is part of the dimensions and blend you are ordering.

  • Can I order by tons?

Use a supplier conversion because moisture and blend composition change weight.

Where these numbers come from

This calculator uses geometry and values shown in the form. Editable product dimensions, coverage figures, prices and allowances are inputs, not universal recommendations; confirm them against the product label, drawing or supplier quote.
